One day, I found myself in Burwood. I actually lived in Burwood for a little while, back in the day, and my go-to back then was the iconic, family-run ‘Cafe Bello’ in its high-exposure Westfield corner on Burwood Rd. It was there last time I checked, but now it’s a Starbucks. C’est la vie. There was no way I was venturing into the Westfield, so I wandered over towards Burwood Park, almost expecting to go without coffee altogether, when I spied what looked like a beautiful, sprawling picnic. Appropriately named, this little garden oasis looked absolutely gorgeous, all decked out in flowers and fairy lights under a marquee in the park, right next to a big garden of roses in full bloom. The small FW was very small, by small standards, so I thought “Oooh, less milk, more opportunity for that shot to shine…” but sadly no, they somehow even managed to make a FW with hardly any milk taste milky. But the more I sipped, the more I realised it actually wasn’t too bad. If it’d been full-sized, the milkiness would’ve been a problem, but as it was, it turned out to be pretty ok. The banana bread was definitely mass-produced (not that there’s anything wrong with that), low on the banana content and a little dry. But passable. For what it’s worth, the toddler loved it. At the end of the day, I wasn’t disappointed, we played in the park and everyone was happy. And really, what more can you expect?
