Back during the coffee boom, this gorgeous little corner location was fitted out with intimate little booths and served boutique coffee and baked goods under the name Vargabar. I knew it had gone, but I was hopeful that perhaps something of the past had been preserved. The cute little booths are still there, so it’s a nice place to sit, but that’s honestly about it. The Beantown signage looked cheap and tacked-on and the food menu looked equally slapped together, so I really didn’t hold high hopes for the coffee or BB. The service was super quick – I paid, turned around, and boom, it was ready. But the coffee was beyond bad… It tasted like the sludge at the bottom of a percolator dissolved in boiling water with a splash of overboiled milk. And the BB was small, cakey, old and just not good. But I feel terrible, because the service was just so lovely! They welcomed me in with a big smile, said lovely things about the babies, I paid the least I’ve ever paid for a coffee and BB and left feeling like they’d just made my day. That’s what it’s all about! If only the rest had been up to scratch.
