I have fond memories of Corelli’s from my uni days. I remember hearty salads full of protein, big trays of house-baked pastries and giant muffins, juicy with berries. Cheap prices, large portions. The food was good, but it was a bit homely, like the kind of fare I’d serve the family on a weekend, and homestyle food that appeals to your inner uni student doesn’t usually go hand-in-hand with an espresso rich with complex aromas. So I didn’t really know what to expect coming in 15 years later, but I guess I was pleased to find it’s more or less the same! If a cafe can stay in the same spot doing the same thing for I don’t know how long, they’re doing it right. All you need to do is give your customers what they expect, and I received a coffee and a BB. There was nothing wrong with either of them. I kinda hoped the BB would be some awesome, huge, house-baked thing, but sadly no, it tasted like it was ordered in from an average supplier. My coffee was just fine, but not great. The barista looked familiar, but I think she was just one of Newtown’s many beautifully unique black sheep. My overall experience was just as positive as I expected it to be, though, given the soft spot I have for Corelli’s, I wish it had been a little bit better.
