Ha, you’ve gotta be kidding. “Footbridge” is basically an on-campus general store with servo-style refrigerated snacks and buttloads of cheesy USyd merch. But just linger here a little and you’ll find something magical gleaming just under its newsagenty exterior. All the USU cafes/kiosks on campus serve the same coffee and bakery sweets, right? Not this place.
There’s some kind of secret sweetness in their BB that I can’t quite put my finger on: is it date? Stevia? The strange flavour is even more prominent in their fruit-and-nut bread, which I like even more than the banana bread, but they haven’t stocked it in a long time, so I always settle for banana bread and am never disappointed. They also have this thing called an Energy Chai (a latte made with a guarana-based chai syrup) that is truly the nectar of the gods. I will haul my pram all the way into the middle of a university campus to get one of these instead of a coffee. It must be drawing me in with some kind of magic force. And the way the Energy Chai and the Fruit and Nut bread go together! I have no words. I thought I knew myself, I thought I knew this campus, and I thought I knew not to mistake general stores for cafes. Nope, Footbridge completely undoes me.
