Soul Brew have carved out a pretty good thing for themselves down their end of the iconic Australia St. Literally surrounded by multiple (better) places for coffee and food (Black Star Pastry, Tokyo Lamington, 212 Blu), one is kinda left wondering what Soul Brew has to offer. For a start, on New Year’s Day, it was the only place open, they were completely smashed with a full house of staff and a crowd out the front, and they were absolutely bringing it. Their food is decent, with a hint of Asian fusion (hint: try the tom-yum spiced cauliflower bites). Their butterfly pea latte is just beautiful. There’s a cool mural down the side wall featuring iconic music legends, and even their staff t-shirts have a little Amy Winehouse printed on the back. The little sunroom courtyard out the back is small but stylish and makes me want to create a similar space at my house. Their coffee and banana bread are fine. Like, good fine. Not bad in any way. The banana bread is a little bit rubbery with crumpety bubbles rather than a cake-like texture. It feels a bit more like a bread and butter pudding, with a dark, caramelly flavour. It’s nice. But 212 Blu‘s Loggerhead coffee and “eye fillet” BB are calling to me from across the road.
