Hello, authentic Newtown cafe. Their minimalist, post-industrial style fitout could have been 3 or 30 years old. The service was a little bit too cool for school, but I would’ve expected nothing less. Excellent coffee. Thank you, Rolling Penny, I rarely get coffees this good. The banana bread was a very alternative, homemade thing, covered in various seeds: sesame, linseed, coriander, aniseed (is aniseed even a seed?). The flavour was incredible, almost savoury, with a big aniseedy hit and earthy flavour. It had a nutty, coconutty wholesome texture as well, with the only drawback being that it was too wholesome to really be fluffy, so it was a little dense and a little dry. It was certainly healthy and rustic, and gets big points for originality of flavour. Rolling Penny is onto a good thing – if they just keep doing what they’re doing, they’ll be doing it for another 30 years and still be cool.
