Cordial is the closest cafe to my house, and I never go there. There’s a reason for this. The friendly, family-style service is great, that’s not it. And it’s not the decent range of humble breakfast products on the menu – I like being able to get a toastie on thick, pillowy white bread rather than a sprouted rye every now and again. Reminds me of Nan. It’s not the coffee, although the coffee is most certainly underwhelming and tastes like something out of a percolator. It’s not even the BB itself – it’s the way the BB is toasted. They must never clean their sandwich press, because the stench on the outside of the BB after it’s been in their toaster literally permeates the flavour of the whole thing (which wasn’t especially good to begin with). Leon, my 1-yr-old, took a bite, said “Blegh!” and wouldn’t eat any more. When a toddler won’t eat BB, there’s something seriously wrong. The service is lovely, the coffee is moderately bad, but the BB is terrible. Sorry, Cordial.
