I remember this place used to be run by a French guy who was a really charismatic part of the community. And man, did he serve good food and coffee. French toast to die for… I think, or maybe I’m just remembering a racial stereoptype. To the new management’s credit, the menu looks more-or less the same and they do a fantastic range of coffee and “latte” drinks (taro, turmeric, matcha etc), including The Whippet, a double-ristretto with 3/4 milk. That’s often what a real cafe will serve you by default when they’re really trying to show off their beans, so it’s a great idea to have this on the menu, but almost doesn’t need to be separately listed. Just make your flat whites low on the milk side with a ristretto shot, and mmmm that’s a nice coffee. While the Whippet shines a cut above, Hollis Park’s regular FW is neither here nor there, which really doesn’t make much sense… if they can make a good coffee, all their coffees should be good. And the BB is nothing to rave about. It’s one of those donutty-flavoured breads that’s a little greasy, high on the cinnamon, low on the banana and tastes a little like artificial banana flavouring. And, very unfortunately for these guys, they are only just down the road from One Another, which outshines them in every respect.
