Well this place has really upscaled! Eighty Ate was my go-to back in high school, and it was always very good, but in homestyle kind of way, with big, tin-cupped thickshakes and plenty of good takeaway options. But over the years, Eighty Ate has really developed into a high-quality establishment and is an all-round performer in the Sydney cafe scene. It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since my first Eighty Ate shake – I guess we’ve all grown up. While I usually don’t like a banana bread that’s “donutty”, what I mean is that I don’t like banana bread that tastes like grease and cinnamon rather than banana. But Eighty Ate’s banana bread was that good-quality donutty kind that I really don’t mind, similar to the one from In The Annex. The coffee was fantastic, complete with a perfect fern leaf. Campos would be proud. I even ate in, with the babies, and they were perfectly accommodating with highchairs, babyccinos… the lot. Never thought I’d be eating here so many years later in such different circumstances, but here we are, and if any cafe had to keep popping up throughout my life story, I’m glad it’s Eighty Ate.
