Well well well, what a pleasant surprise! Didn’t think I’d find someone like you here, Juniper & Rye. Newtown is just full of surprises. This little micro bakery is a little off the beaten track, and yet hidden in plain sight in the middle of Alice St. I’ve probably driven past it a hundred times without realising it was there, but on this sunny winter’s day, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Juniper & Rye is bright and airy, with a line of super cool vintage seating looking out the street-front window and amazing house-baked treats in little glass cabinets everywhere you look. A beautifully-lettered blackboard beckons me to try their magic coffee, but I stuck with my flat white today (for science) and I was rewarded with a hot, rich, delicious Single O experience. Alas, no banana bread, but my piece of peach walnut sourdough cake was so good that even the little ones were chowing down. The baby took such a big bite that the toddler cried. I don’t often venture down Alice St, but I’d make a special detour just to visit Juniper & Rye. Fingers crossed, maybe they’ll have baked some banana bread next time.
