Black Star Pastry and N2 Extreme Gelato have had a lovechild and she is stunning. I first stumbled upon Tokyo Lamington in late 2020 when it was a pop-up in Market City and loved the seamless fusion of iconic Aussie food and delicate Japanese style. Now, its particular blend of alternative, cool and professional fits perfectly into the Newtown cafe scene. Needless to say, their coffee is of the highest standard: Single O, executed with the same light, crisp Japanese perfection that makes their lamingtons so distinctive. While they don’t serve banana bread on a regular basis, they’ve occasionally had a “bakery day” with a larger range of baked treats, and they do have a nice range of savoury pies and onigiri to supplement their lamingtons. But the lamingtons are definitely the star of the show here: fluffy like a cloud, yet perfectly cube-shaped with just the right amount of sweetness and density for a delicious sweet treat that doesn’t overdo it. And with flavours like Yuzu Meringue, Rose & Strawberry and Fairy Bread, these lamingtons are an absolute delight to the senses.
