The Source is real OG. There’s a super cool vintage-looking roaster sitting in the front window that’s actually covered in bean husks and somehow looks like it gets regular use. There were two perfect books sitting on the table where I was waiting: a colourful kids’ book, “Trucks and Diggers”, and “Speciality Coffee in Sydney”, which was almost like a photographic reference guide to Sydney’s cafe scene in that formative decade between 2000-2010. It was almost like looking through my college yearbook, filled with old memories of all the great places I used to hunt down in and around the city and inner west. The Source was a source, of course, of course.
Unsurprisingly my coffee was fantastic. I wish I’d ordered something a little more “coffee” than a flat white, but it was one of the best damn flat whites I’ve ever had, so I was happy. The banana bread was loaded with fresh berries including big wedges of strawberry, which is especially impressive right now. Due to some sort of supply issue, I haven’t been able to get strawberries in my usual grocery order for weeks, and a punnet at my local IGA currently costs $11.80. Given how much strawberry was in the banana bread, The Source should add a “strawberry surcharge”. But the berries were just an unexpectedly delicious bonus. The bread itself was also just a fantastic banana bread, with a perfectly soft texture, both moist and not too dense, holding together well with a good-sized slice.
Ah, The Source. How I’ve missed you. You may not be in the Inner West, but you’re certainly making a persuasive argument for the rest of Sydney.
