I just happened to be visiting a friend at the Flourmill Studios, otherwise I never would have found this place. Tucked away down Gladstone St (think behind Young Henry’s), Els & Co is very off the beaten track and seems to primarily cater to nearby workers. The decor was a strange mix of bamboo and fake jungle leaves, with mismatched vintage tables and chairs – not a harmonious fusion. My coffee was over-boiled and under-extracted. My banana bread was excessively greasy. The service was friendly, but slow, and I had to remind them to toast the banana bread, even though I was the only person there and that’s all I was ordering. My toddler was excited about his babyccino, but even that was unrealistically hot for a toddler. Unfortunately, this foyer-based cafe isn’t enough of a drawcard for anyone to seek it out intentionally – it may be hidden, but it’s not a gem.
