I have a bit of a soft spot for Shenkin Erskineville because I’ve just been coming here since the very beginning, and any restaurant that can maintain such consistency over so many years is worth its weight in gold. I first remember going to Shenkin on a regular basis back when I was in uni. It had only recently opened and the Haikin family’s youngest son (who I’m pretty sure was even younger than me) manned the espresso machine and was serving up Little Marionette at the time, though they’ve since switched to Seven Mile. He had an incredible knowledge of beans and flavours and Shenkin’s coffees were freakin’ impressive. They still are. Shenkin’s unique blend of Israeli home-cooking and Sydney hospitality professionalism is the basis for both a great restaurant and cafe. And over the years, they’ve only evolved. First, they were my uni haunt, then the place for lunch meetings, and now with a family of five, they’re my regular source of breakfast delivery, literally dropping amazing coffee and something delicious for everyone in the family at my door pretty much every Saturday morning. Shenkin just know how to do it, whatever it is, and do it perfectly.
